Sailors earn all-star triumphs

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High was part of both the winning girls’ and boys’ teams at the 31st annual Dave Mohs Memorial Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star matches Friday at Newport Harbor.

The girls’ match featured Sailors seniors Megan Munce, Jamie Heenan, Alex Penewell and Alesha Young helping the South team to a 25-21, 17-25, 15-10 victory over the North.

In the boys’ match, Newport Harbor was on the North team. Seniors Kyle Caldwell, Tucker Peleuses, Mark Liebermann and Max Volz helped the North to a 25-23, 28-30, 15-8 victory.

Corona del Mar High seniors Gus Ellis, Jeff Carlson and Spencer Brown were on the South squad.

In the girls’ match, TCU-bound Munce and Vanguard-bound Heenan had eight kills apiece. Penewell, headed for the University of Colorado, had three kills and four blocks, and Loyola Marymount-bound Alesha Young dished out 20 assists.

Caldwell, headed for UCLA, had five kills, four blocks and 20 assists in the boys’ match. USC-bound Peleuses had seven kills and two blocks, while UC Santa Barbara-bound Liebermann had four kills and one ace.

Volz, headed for OCC, had two kills and three blocks.

Stanford-bound Ellis had two kills and seven blocks for the South, USC-bound Jeff Carlson had three kills and a block and Colorado-bound Brown had four digs.

The MVP of the girls’ match was Dana Hutchinson of Laguna Beach.

Aaron Gerardi of Fountain Valley was MVP of the boys’ match.
