Assemblyman Chuck DeVore’s proposal to establish a statewide emergency alert system to help catch at-large felons took another step forward, when the Assembly Public Safety Committee endorsed the measure in a 5-0 bipartisan vote.

The ALAN Alert System, named after Alan Doyle, a 16-year-old whose killer fled to Mexico for eight years prior to his eventual arrest, is similar to the AMBER system, used to alert motorists and law enforcement to children recently gone missing.

The proposal would employ similar equipment on highways, posting vehicle and personal descriptions of those fleeing the country.

The bill will be heard next in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, though a date for that hearing has not yet been scheduled.
