EL CAJON — Sophomore Brandon Dixon had his no-hit bid ended with one out in the ninth when Tony Jusino doubled for the Griffins’ lone hit Friday.

Dixon, a left-hander who transferred from Cypress College, was then relieved by Brett Wallach, who finished the shutout.

Dixon struck out five to win his first decision. He retired the side in order in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. After walking the leadoff man in the fourth, he picked him off of first base.

OCC left fielder Chris Fung made a diving catch of a sinking liner in the second inning, foiling Grossmont’s best chance for a hit until the ninth.

“After [Fung] made that diving catch, I actually started thinking about the no-hitter in the third inning, which I know is early,” Dixon said. “But with the way the boys were playing behind me, I really thought I had a chance. But, by the ninth, I was really throwing on fumes.”

Sophomore outfielder Cory Olson had RBI singles in the first and ninth innings for the Pirates (6-1-1), who had nine hits.

Grossmont fell to 5-3.
