The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is gearing up for its 25th summer this weekend, fire department officials said.

Kids 9 to 15 years old learn about marine environment hazards in the eight-week, ocean-training program that starts with tryouts this Sunday, spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz said.

Participants must swim 100 yards within a time limit based on age and tread water for three minutes, she said. The swim tests are from 9 a.m. to noon Sundays through Feb. 24 at the Newport Harbor High School pool. A test will also be 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 21.

Participants should bring a birth certificate or passport for proof of age. Tryouts are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Passing the tests does not guarantee participation, officials said. The program is limited to 1,250 participants. More information at (949) 675-8420 or www.newportlifeguard.org.
