Girls under 14

Green Lightning 3, Costa Mesa 2 (Sunday): The Green Lightning took third place in the Mayors Cup, winning against Costa Mesa. Gigi Light and Monika Petersen scored for the Lightning, with assists from Tamera Myers and Paige Bell-Wheelan. Page Keys, Megan Farley and Rochelle Bowlin attacked and contributed on defense. Great defensive plays and big kicks were made by Andrea Ocampo, Hannah Beek, Lauren Steinke and Janet Zelpa. Michelle Brookes and Lauren Steinke had four saves each.

Green Lightning 2, Costa Mesa 2 (Saturday): The Green Lightning came back from a 2-0 deficit to score both goals in the fourth quarter. Petersen and Bell-Wheelan knocked the ball in the net for the scores. Farley, Beek and Bowlin excelled at midfield. Light and Keys led the attack on offense.

Green Lightning 4, Corona del Mar 0 (Saturday): Keys scored the first goal in the second quarter and Petersen followed with two goals. Myers tapped in the final goal. Zelpa and Brookes combined for 10 saves. Farley, Myers and Steinke protected the goal.

Girls under 12

Strikers 3, Pink Pirates 1: Sabrina Sanchez scored two goals and Sierra Stump scored one for the Strikers in their Mayors’ Cup final win over the Pink Pirates, also from Region 97. Kate Mcfetters and Emily Nall each had an assist. Kilie Stivers, Lauren Hanson, and Cortlynn Clement played halfback with shots on goal and set up scoring opportunities. Olivia Muscatello, Michelle Duchus, Camille Christensen, Brooke Hinton, and Alana Aguirre all played great defense turning away scoring chances. Alex Vasquez played the entire game in goal with several stops and great punts. The Strikers now have a 15-0-1 record.

Girls under 10

Breakers capture Area Q Plus gold: The Newport Beach Breakers girls’ under-10 Plus team, captured the gold by winning the Area Q Plus tournament over Corona del Mar, 2-0, Sunday at Mariners School.

The Breakers, who finished the regular season in first place, faced a tough Costa Mesa squad in the first round on Saturday. Holly Clemence scored the first goal with a volley off a corner kick in the second quarter. Toni Holland scored the goal of the tournament with an angled header from a cross by Taylor McMorrow, increasing the Breaker’s lead to 2-0. Bailey Prado scored a third-quarter goal and the Breakers cruised to a 3-1 win.
