High winds, fallen palm tree sparks power outage

October 06, 2007

More than 5,400 Costa Mesa residents lost power Thursday for more than three hours when palm tree leaves hit an electrical pole.

The power went out for 5,457 customers at 1:40 p.m. and was restored at 5:05 p.m., a Southern California Edison representative said. Police believed high winds blew the top of a tree into the pole.

A line crew fixed the damaged equipment, which supplied power to homes and businesses bounded by Baker to Wilson streets and Harbor Boulevard to the 55 Freeway, officials said.

The outage also knocked out the traffic light at Victoria Street and Newport Boulevard, forcing officers to direct traffic for more than an hour.
