Mavericks step up

SOCCER: AYSO boys’ under-11 plus team from Newport Beach wins fourth straight and deals North Irvine its first loss.

Black Vipers 1, Golden Galaxy 0: Jack Christensen had a free kick and scored for the undefeated Vipers. Max Duncan, Jake Lucas and Alejandro Vargas played hard and made some great plays. The goalie, Andrew Pimental, had two great saves and no goals scored on him.

Golden Fireballs vs. Shooting Clovers: The Fireballs were up to the challenge with scores by Jordan Golden, Michelle Pokusa and Katie Browman. The coaches were proud to see great team soccer and position play including great defense "in the Boomerang" by Sydney Palmer, Lara Farinsky and Lauren Lyons. Betsy Calder, Miranda McCormick and Lauren Babin were fearless goalies, stopping many Clover boots.

Wildcats vs. Green Shamrocks: A great goal by Peri Rieke led to the Wildcats’ first win this season. In goal, Emma Kennedy stopped all goal attempts in the first half and Libby Larner kept the goal equally safe in the second half. Great passing and assists by powerhouse players Klaire Thoman, Abbigail Buggeln, Alex Stamy and McKenna Carroll aided the cause. Shannon White and Camber Calderwood shined on defense.

Green Machines vs. Red Team: Claire Covina scored a spectacular side-angled goal with the assist of a very persistent and speedy Eva Nadeau. Holly Nance was dependable with her ball control, and Paxton Bryant really stepped up her offensive game. Strong in the midfield were Emma Hammond and Paige Clayton, and running down the ball with lightening speed was Rachel Del Valle. Kate La Grandeur saved the day many times with her quick thinking and fearless defensive moves.

The Firecrackers vs. Trojans: Throughout the game the Firecrackers mounted a fabulous defense, keeping the Trojans from scoring despite 12 shots on goal in the first half alone. Goalkeeper Billy White made several diving stops to keep the ball out of the net in the first half, as did Jacob Matt. On offense, Keagan Coyne, Niko Kerr and Scott Faludi worked together to put several shots on the Trojans’ goal.

Gators vs. Black Knights: A phenomenal game was played by the Gators, as Ian Hanson scored his first-ever goal. With great passing from Tommy Hanle and Hunter Hall, Cole McFetters and Vincent Rubino scored as well. Domenic Christiansen, Matthew Ingram, Carter Bays and Lucas Ovalle played amazingly well at all positions assigned. Joshua Gehlke literally came out of the tree to shine in the fourth quarter.
