Mavericks step up

October 03, 2007

The team showed great teamwork for the goal between Lea Phillips, Savannah Fausto and Hubbard.

San Clemente 2, Newport Strikers 0: In a game that kept both keepers busy, Newport matched their opponents play for play, allowing only two San Clemente corner kicks to rebound into the net. Emma Erickson and Grace Emmel both contributed some booming clears on defense. Kappy Fuller and Molly McCunniff cut-off the opponents’ angles and constantly challenged to round out the Newport defense. Kierstyn Yardley and Colette Vigil were first to the ball, winning tackles in the midfield. They were supported by Mackenzie Gaddis, Kate Pipkin, and Brooke Meer with excellent positioning.

Brooke Schweitzer and Claire McCarthy had several good dribbling runs, followed by shots on goal from Gabby Shelley and Abbey Pickett. Logan Grove was solid in the goal for Newport with double-digit saves.

Blue Crush 3, Pink Panthers 1: Blue Crush forward Kelly Sandberg scored two goals in the first half and forward Kate Hefner also had a first-half goal. The Pink Panthers scored their single goal in the second half of the game.

Hot Tamales: The Hot Tamales girls played well together but couldn’t connect with the net for a tough loss. Outstanding offensive plays were made by Kendall Cosenza, Megan Keys, Haley Martinez and Genesee Giedt. Demi Ronis and Maggie Osumi did a stellar job in goal. Amanda Cox, Rebecca Szulga and Callie Spooner fought hard to win the ball. Destry Comp, Caylee Talbot and Megan Deegan hustled as midfielders and defenders.

Barracudas 3, Silver Bullets 2: Zach Durham scored in the first quarter, while Ethan Zimmerman lined the ball up and kicked one in on the diagonal in the second quarter. Race Chambers also scored in the second quarter. Jack McClintock got a pass from Durham and nearly added another one, kicking just wide of the goal. Briggs D’eliscu did some strong midfield work.

Sam Wertheimer scored two for the Silver Bullets. Hunter Warmington, Sean Freeman and R.J. Reid provided downfield kicks. Riley Blake, Marley Aragon and Dylan Wolfe contributed to the Barracudas defensive effort.

Green Devils 3, Fire 0: Connor Lindenstadt and Ryan Balkey both scored goals. Taso Marcopolous had five stops as goalie, Mitchell Luckey had four and Ryan Balkey had two. Jake Smith, Patrick Lynch and Alex Michaelsen all played tough defense. Zachary McKay, Caleb Detken, Tony Sanchez and Rex Kathcart all played hard and aided in the Green Devils victory.
