Mavericks step up

SOCCER: AYSO boys’ under-11 plus team from Newport Beach wins fourth straight and deals North Irvine its first loss.

The Newport Beach Mavericks continued their succesful season with a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten North Irvine in an AYSO Region 97 boys’ under-11 plus Sunday.

Newport stayed undefeated with its fourth straight win, gaining two scores from Carson Poivre, and one each from Cash Swank and Will Hinkelman. Jack Binford, Byron Gutierrez and Cory Stowell assisted the scores with solid passes. The defense, anchored by Dominik Folkner, was solid as Riley Gaddis, Caleb O’Neil, Peter Seidner and Sawyer Farmer made tremendous stops. Ryan Braun continued his solid play in goal, shutting out North Irvine in the first quarter before contributing on the field with Kevin Tellez, Christian Watson, and Chas Beek.

In other AYSO Region 97 games played over the weekend:

Ice Cubes 4, Ogres 3: Parker Young scored three goals to help the Ice Cubes win their first game of the season. Young scored on an assist from Jonathan Richards. Josh Ford scored. Sam Jones and Luke Mueller had an assist each. Goalie Patrick Halle kept the ball away from the net.

Cesar Guzman and Richards demonstrated their swiftness and excellent ball handling skills. Joe Janssen was able to keep control of the ball even when he was knocked down onto the grass.

Green Lightning 5, CM No. 4 0: Monika Peterson scored three goals, while Gigi Light and Rochelle Bowlin scored one each.

Page Keys had an assist. The offense of Janet Zelpa, Paige Bell-Wheelan, Andrea O’Campo and Kaelyn Kuenli were on the attack all game. Midfielders Megan Farley, Lauren Steinke, Hannah Beek and Tamera Myers sparkled the Green Lightning defense and kept the ball out of the net.

Great Green Sharks 5, Quicksilver 1: Led by Britney Myers with three goals and McKenna Johnson with two goals, the Great Green Sharks earned their first victory of the season. Cassidy Davis and Rachel Digiambattista helped offensively, while Macy Tellez and Emily Cook led the defensive effort.

Paradise Parrots 1, Aqua Strikers 1: Tyler Stupor and Rebekah Foster started off the game with great defensive plays for the Parrots. Bailey Carr had a huge defense kick down the field. Nicole Franco had numerous blocks. Felicity Giddings, Savannah Fausto and Noelle Hubbard commanded the goalie position with many saves. Marlee Phillips had great control of the ball with a nice long run down field. Lea Phillips and Brittnee Grosskopf had constant contact with the ball, making some great plays. Noelle Hubbard had the one goal of the game.
