The first Chick Hearn Legacy Scholarship Award will be presented at the YMCA’s Reach Out Awards ceremony at the Costa Mesa Hilton Oct. 12.
The award commemorates legendary sports broadcaster Chick Hearn, the “Voice of the Lakers” for 42 years until his death in August 2002. Hearn’s widow, Marge, will present the inaugural award that night at the 32nd annual Reach Out banquet.
Marge Hearn created an endowment for the YMCA with a $50,000 donation last year in Chick’s name. The annual Reach Out Awards gala recognizes those who have reached out to help children and families in need in Orange County.
