Area's 42 to compete in junior sectionals

TENNIS: DiGiulio, Matthews, Gaytan-Leach among top contenders at SCTA tournament, that begins Saturday.

The largest annual junior tennis tournament in the United States will ascend on the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley this weekend, and 42 local juniors are in the mix.

The 105th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships run until June 25 at various sites around Orange County, including the tournament headquarters at Los Cab, Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club and Costa Mesa Tennis Center. But matches begin Saturday for all divisions.

Newport Beach resident Joseph DiGiulio, who is ranked No. 1 in the country in boys' 12 singles, has a first-round bye in the division and will have a Round of 64 match on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Cabrillo Tennis Center in Santa Ana. He could face Paul Kacik, another Newport Beach resident, in that match.

CdM's Fabian Matthews, the two-time CIF Southern Section doubles champion with Dustin Hladek, is entered into the boys' 18 doubles draw at sectionals with Ryan Cheung of Lomita. The duo, the No. 2 seed, opens Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Los Caballeros in the Round of 32 and would play a Round of 16 match at 5:15 p.m.

Also in the doubles draw are Sea Kings' teammates Chris Damion and Parker Rhodes, who play their Round of 32 match today at 2 p.m. at Los Cab. Damion has his first boys' 16 singles match of the tournament on Sunday at 8 a.m. at Heritage Park in Irvine, while Rhodes, in 18 singles, plays Sunday at 9:45 a.m. at Los Cab.

Matthews is also entered in the boys' 18 singles draw, but as a top 16 seed he won't need to start play there until June 22, after the preliminary rounds are over.

CdM's Cierra Gaytan-Leach is teamed with Santa Barbara's Jordan Dockendorf in the girls' 18 doubles draw. The No. 4 seed, they open Saturday at 12:45 p.m. in the Round of 32 at Los Cab.

Gaytan-Leach also has her first girls' 18 singles match of the tournamenton Sunday at 5 p.m. at Los Cab.

Estancia's Bradley Fisher (boys' 18 singles) and Ely Zaidler (boys' 16s) are both entered. Fisher plays a Round of 128 match Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Los Cab, and Zaidler opens Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at Cabrillo.

On the girls' side, Estancia's Ellie Edles has a girls' 16 singles match Sunday at 9:30 a.m., also at Cabrillo.

Five members of the Corona del Mar High girls' tennis team, which capped an undefeated season by winning the CIF Southern Section Division I championship in the fall, are entered in sectionals. They include Hailey Hogan, Karen Ishii, Melissa Matsuoka, Danielle Kaiden and Lindsay Zotovich, all in the girls' 16 singles draw.
