Local tennis player in stable condition

Bill Rosener, of Newport Beach, is in stable condition after suffering a heart attack at Palisades Tennis Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Rosener, 75, was playing in a match on center court at Palisades at about 12:30 p.m. when he collapsed, Palisades owner Ken Stuart said. Palisades activities director Mo Conter went to get a defibrillator, which she used on Rosener.

After the paramedics came and took Rosener to Hoag Memorial Hospital, it was determined that he had two arteries that were 100% blocked, Stuart said. The doctors said that Conter had saved Rosener's life by using the defibrillator.

The club employees had just taken six hours of training on how to use the equipment on June 5, a week before the heart attack occurred.

"I saw Mo today, and this has been a real life-changing experience for her," Stuart said on Thursday.

Rosener had quadruple bypass surgery on Wednesday night and his assisted breathing apparatus was removed Thursday afternoon.

Stuart said that Rosener has been a member at Palisades Tennis Club since the club opened in 1974. A longtime friend of Rosener, Stuart said that Rosener had shown no symptoms of heart troubles in the past.

He also said there's no family history of heart problems.

Rosener is expected to be out of the hospital in about a week.
