Beyond The Box Score

June 15, 2007

There are two ways Doug Smith viewed working with the Seattle Seahawks offensive line during a recent four-day mini-camp in Kirkland, Wash.

"It's beneficial to them," said the Orange Coast College offensive line coach, "and it's beneficial to me because it's getting me ready for football."

Smith, a former six-time All-Pro lineman with the then-Los Angeles Rams, said he was invited to the voluntary camp by his former Rams Coach Gil Haskell, who's now Seattle's offensive coordinator. Smith said Haskell wanted his insight and to work with some of the younger linemen who might block for running back Shaun Alexander, who rushed for an NFL-record 28 touchdowns in 2005.

"I offered an old player's perspective," said Smith, who began his 14-year NFL career in 1978. "We talked about footwork and hand placement, stuff only linemen would know about."
