Greer's Best Buys:

Palm Terrace's new menu, décor a treat for the eyes and palate

June 15, 2007|By GREER WYLDER

The Palm Terrace restaurant at the Island Hotel Newport Beach is a great place to celebrate Father's Day. It has a new menu and interior after being closed for two months — and they are worth the wait.

The restaurant (formerly named Pavilion) exudes a tropical oasis vibe with a lush look and plenty of foliage accents.

And in the kitchen, executive chef Bill Bracken continues to prepare incredible dishes.

This time, Bracken presents small, savory bites. Now you can order customized tasting menus at lunch and dinner.

Bracken's twist on American-style cuisine includes signature dishes like the truffle-scented macaroni and cheese and a flavorful potato-crusted Chilean sea bass.

There are exciting new dishes, including summer fish stew (Bracken's version of paella, brimming with fresh seafood) and 30-hour (no kidding) Kobe short ribs with summer vegetables.

Lunch highlights range from tuna tartine (ahi tuna salad sandwich on toasted ciabatta) to heirloom tomato gazpacho to the robust prime ground beef burger (with roasted onions and Tillamook cheddar atop a plump focaccia bun).

The restaurant also features custom floor-to-ceiling wine cabinets, stocking more than 1,000 wine bottles. Or try a "martini of the day," island-inspired mojitos, fruity mai tais and south-of-the-border-style margaritas.

The Palm Terrace open for breakfast from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday; 7 to 11 a.m. Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner is nightly, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The adjacent Palm Terrace Lounge serves cocktails and small bites daily, from 11 a.m. to midnight; 690 Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach. (949) 760-4920. www.theislandhotel.com.
