What appear to be human remains were recovered Friday morning about 75 feet from the East jetty in Corona del Mar, the site where a man and woman were fishing before they were swept into the water by large surf two months ago.
Mindful that the body of Irvine resident Yi Ni Kwong has not been recovered, six divers assigned to the Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol entered the water because it was "so clear," Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said. They found a pelvic bone and what appears to be human flesh, and an initial investigation by the coroner's office indicated they are likely from a human, Amormino said.
The remains were 20 feet below the ocean's surface, lodged in a cave created by the rocks that shape the jetty. An anthropologist and pathologist will inspect the remains.
