Arrest logs now denote legal status

January 27, 2007

The Costa Mesa Police Department is now publishing information about immigration holds on people held in Costa Mesa Jail. Publicly available daily arrest logs now contain a separate column indicating whether the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent stationed in the jail has flagged an arrestee for likely deportation. These logs already contain personal identifying information, as well as the reasons for arrest.

An agency employee has been interviewing arrestees in the jail since Dec. 4. In the first month the agent placed immigration holds on 46 inmates, authorities said.

The arrest log is available at the Costa Mesa Police Department front desk at 99 Fair Drive, next to City Hall.
