LOS ANGELES — Cal's Jeff Tyrell scored a goal at the fourth-quarter buzzer, lifting the Bears to a 7-6 win over USC and the 2006 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship at Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

Cal senior John Mann, a Corona del Mar High product, scored a goal in the third quarter, giving the Golden Bears their first lead of the game at 5-4. He also earned a five-meter penalty shot for teammate Brian Bacharach in the second quarter.

Mann was named to the all-tournament team.

Cal beat the Trojans in both the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship game and the NCAA championship, earning its 12th men's water polo national championship.

Tyrell's goal came after USC's Thomas Hale tied the score with just two seconds left in regulation.

Santa Ana sophomore quarterback Kasey Peters, a Newport Harbor High product, was an honorable mention on the J.C. Grid-Wire All-American Team.

Peters threw 25 touchdown passes for the Dons, breaking Daniel Morales' school record of 24 set last season. Peters finished with 2,588 yards, another Dons' record, while going 203 for 363 with 11 interceptions. His 203 completions and 363 attempts are also school records.

Cam Monahan scored four goals and contributed three assists to lead the Newport Harbor JVA Roller Hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Trabuco Hills Wednesday.

Newport Harbor, which improved to 4-0, will face rival Corona del Mar Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Irvine Roller Hockey Center.
