CIF State Championships

Corona del Mar High will play at Redwood of Visalia to open the Southern California Division III regional playoffs Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Sea Kings (22-8) lost in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA title match to Laguna Beach Saturday.

Corona del Mar, led by Juliane Piggott, Kelly Christian and Kasey Kipp, earned the state tournament berth by reaching the final.


Redwood (22-8) won its first-ever Central Section volleyball championship Thursday when the Rangers defeated El Diamante in four games. Stephanie Correia led Redwood with 19 kills. Courtney Collishaw added 17 kills and Jamie Shaw 16. Lauryn Leong, the Rangers' setter, recorded 50 assists.

If the Sea Kings claim the victory they would face the El Diamante-at-Laguna Beach winner. Laguna Beach is the second seed in the region behind Santa Margarita. The eight teams in the region are vying to reach the sate final, Dec. 2 at San Jose State.


CIF Individual Tournament

COSTA MESA — The Corona del Mar High doubles teams of Jill Damion and Cierra Gaytan-Leach, as well as Lindsay Zotovich and Karen Ishii, won three qualifying rounds at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Saturday.

Both teams advance to the CIF Southern Section Individual tennis championships, which begin Nov. 30 at the Seal Beach Tennis Center with the Round of 16.

Damion and Gaytan-Leach lost just one game on the day. In the first round, they beat Emily Garcia and Julia McDaniel of Cypress, 6-0, 6-0, following that up with a second-round win over Biep Vuong and Mong Hoang of Westminster by an identical score. They then beat Alle Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek of Sage Hill, 6-0, 6-1, in the third round to qualify.

Zotovich and Ishii got past Danielle and Gabrielle Golden of Arlington, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round, then topped Kimberly Smith and Alison Azera of Laguna Beach by an identical score. In the third round, they beat Jennifer Chow and Erica Liao of Troy, 6-2, 6-4.

CdM's Melissa Matsuoka lost in the second round of singles play, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 to Julie Luzar of El Dorado. She had defeated Christine Huynh of Bolsa Grande in the first round, 6-0, 6-0.

Sage Hill

Alle Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek advanced to the third round before losing to Damion and Gaytan-Leach. Lightning Coach A.G. Longoria said it's the third consecutive year Hsu had advanced to the third round, with three different partners.

Her 13 postseason victories is also a school record, he said.

In the first round, Hsu and Smrecek beat Kelly Ness and Tatiana McClure of Linfield Christian, 6-1, 6-0. In the second round, they beat Sasha Dunlap and Chrissy Schwartz of Newport Harbor, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.


Ellie Edles lost to No. 1 seed Allison Ramos of Troy in the third round, 0-6, 0-6. She defeated Bolsa Grande's Alice Pham (6-0, 6-0) in the first round and Dana Hills' Brooke Pletcher (2-6, 7-5, 10-7) in the second.

Newport Harbor

Dunlap and Schwartz had advanced to the second round by beating Lauren Joy and Monika Marcinkezious of Palm Desert, 6-1, 6-1, in their opening match.

Sailors singles player Alex McIntosh won her first match, 6-0, 6-0, against Stephanie Rodriguez of Rancho Verde. She then lost to Dhra Zamudio of Villa Park, 6-2, 6-3.
