A sprinkler system inside a Newport Beach apartment complex helped to minimize damage when a fire broke out just after 4 p.m. Saturday, officials said.
The fire started on the outdoor patio of a second-floor apartment in the Baypointe Apartments in the 2000 block of Baypointe Drive at 4:15 p.m. The sprinkler system helped to extinguish the fire and contain the blaze to the patio, Newport Fire spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz said.
Newport Beach firefighters rescued two dogs inside the apartment. The apartment residents were not at home at the time of the fire.
