It was a grand opening of the summer season at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort as Newport Beach Mayor Don Webb and his wife, Jan, officially proclaimed the start of the summer social season on the bay. More important, the recent Sunday afternoon ceremony marked the 14th year that the Balboa Bay Club has honored the achievements of local graduating high school seniors by offering the 1221 Club's scholarship awards. Beverly Ray Parkhurst, chairwoman of the Balboa Bay Club's board, proudly addressed the crowd of nautically attired guests and noted that the club had donated more than $400,000 in grants to date. Joining Ray for the presentation of the 2006 scholarship awards were David Wooten, Henry Schielein, John Wortmann and Tom Tyson.
The 2006 winners included a brother and sister pair from Corona del Mar High School. Kenneth and Stephanie Wong each received a $5,000 grant. Kenneth will attend UC San Diego with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. Stephanie is off to Washington University in St. Louis. Also honored was Lincoln Tran from Costa Mesa High School. Tran received a $2,000 grant and will attend UC Berkley in the fall. A second $2,000 grant was given to Cathy Pittman from Estancia High School. Finally, the E. Morris Smith Governor's Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 was granted to Daniel Furman from Newport Harbor High School. This award goes annually to a student athlete. Furman, with a 4.32 grade-point average, excelled at water polo at Newport Harbor and will attend Harvard in the fall.
