The seventh-ranked UC Irvine men's water polo team withstood a late charge by No. 11 Loyola Marymount and won, 8-7, in a nonconference game at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on Thursday night.
Junior Tim Hutten led UC Irvine (10-8) with three goals, and seniors Dreason Barry and Nate White added two each. Sophomore Andrew Dunn's only goal of the game proved to be the game-winner as he scored with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter to give the Anteaters an 8-4 lead before Loyola Marymount scored three unanswered goals.
Matt Garcia had four saves for the Anteaters, who face No. 2 California in Berkeley on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game. UCI visits Pacific in Stockton at noon Sunday.
