I was about to leave work when I heard over the scanner a call for

fire trucks to respond to a blaze in the Eastbluff area of Newport

Beach.

By the time I made it there, fire trucks lined the road up to the

burned town house. I parked out of the way on a side street and

walked toward the house.

Firefighters had quickly put out the flames, but smoke was still

rising from the structure. The lights of the fire engine trucks

silhouetted the firefighters as they waked on the roof looking for

hot spots, making for a dramatic image.

Because of the low light, I braced my camera and lens against a

tree trunk and waited for a moment to grab a photograph.
