UCI pounds Bears

Chris Nicoll pitched six innings, allowing no runs and three hits in

the UC Irvine baseball team's 10-1 season-opening victory Friday at

Cal.

Nicoll (1-0) was credited with the win for the Anteaters (1-0),

while Cal's Adam Gold (0-1) received the loss after pitching 5 2/3

innings with seven runs and nine hits against him. UCI's Nash

Robertson had the save.

UCI scored its first run in the top of the first on a Mark Wagner

solo home run, and the Anteaters tacked on two runs in the third, one

in the fourth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the

ninth.

Wagner finished 2 of 5 with two RBIs, while R.J. Brown, Chad

Lundahl and Brett Dalton also had two hits apiece for UCI. Tim

Stewart added a two-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning and Jaime

Martinez had a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI groundout in

the sixth.

UCI plays today at 1 p.m. in the second of three games at Cal.

Theriot selects UCLA

* FOOTBALL: Newport Harbor High football standout Trevor Theriot

has chosen to walk on at UCLA.

Theriot, who played fullback and linebacker while captaining the

Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division VI championship game at

Angel Stadium last fall, chose UCLA Friday, over USC and San Jose

State, two other options he was considering.

Theriot, named Division VI Co-Offensive Player of the Year, was

also recently chosen to play in the Shrine game in June, pitting the

best graduated high school seniors from public and private schools

against each other.

Sailors secure second

* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team

clinched second place in the Sea View League Friday with a 70-45

victory over host Laguna Hills.

Robert Koon finished with two points and a team-high six steals

for Newport (15-9, 7-2 in league). The Sailors committed 18 steals in

the first half, en route to a school-record 27.

Taylor Young had a team-high 18 points to go with his five steals

and 16 rebounds for the Tars.
