UCI's Morton advances
* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Brian Morton reached the semifinals in
singles and the quarterfinals in doubles with three victories Friday
in the 48th Southern California Intercollegiates at the Los Angeles
Tennis Club.
The unseeded Morton, a former Corona del Mar High standout, downed
USC's Brian Wright, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16 before ousting
Mathieu Dehuane of UCLA, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Morton faces top-seeded Luben Pampoulov of UCLA in the semifinals
at 11 a.m.
Morton and partner Ryusuke Kashiwabara defeated UC Santa Barbara's
Hagen Brodie and Anders Dalskov, 8-5, in the round of 32. The duo
will face Billy Mertz and Luigi Dagord from the University of Alabama
in the round of 16 at 1 p.m. today.
Ex-Tar Mackey triples
* SWIMMING: UC Irvine swimmers Tom Randall and Lara Bjargardottir,
along with diver Jackie Jones, each won one event while former
Newport Harbor High standout Nicole Mackey claimed three events in
the Big West Conference Shootout at the Anteater Aquatics Complex
Friday.
Mackey, who attends the University of Hawaii, paced the field in
the women's 100 backstroke (55.67), 200 back (2:01.18) and 100
butterfly (56.37).
