Newport's boys team placed second, only losing to Laguna Hills,
38-20. Nick St. Andre had the best time for the Sailors, finishing in
seventh place overall with a time of 16:18. In his first varsity
race, Francisco Avonce finished 30th overall with a time of 18:22.
McElveny saves 18
* WATER POLO: Richard McElveny had 18 saves and Chad Kunert fired
in seven goals to lead Estancia High past Ocean View, 15-7, in
Pacific Coast League boys water polo play Wednesday at Ocean View.
Danny Alderete was just behind Kunert in scoring with five goals,
as the Eagles went up, 8-3, just before the half, and ran away with
it in the second half. The Eagles (6-3, 2-0 in league) scored most of
their points off counterattacks.

Sailors improve to 2-0
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team
improved its league record to 2-0 Wednesday, defeating Aliso Niguel
in four games, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-10.
Kiley Hall led the Sailors, slamming 10 kills to Aliso's side and
serving up four aces. Taryn Tarnutzer followed Hall with seven kills
and four aces.
Coast cruises past Cypress
* WATER POLO: Kimberly Yarina scored two goals to lead the
visiting Orange Coast College women's water polo team to a 7-1 Orange
Empire Conference victory over Cypress Wednesday.
Cynthia Hilgenberg, Jeanette DeMeneces, Laura DeMeneces, Ashley
Maher and Vanessa Lara each tallied one goal for the Pirates (10-5,
2-1 in the OEC), ranked fourth in the state.
Kelly Dargel made three saves for the Bucs.
