Orange County Museum of Art officials debuted the museum's Orange

Lounge art gallery at South Coast Plaza last week, and I took the

assignment not quite knowing what the lounge was about.

I found the Orange Lounge to be a unique gallery. Its

presentations are all multimedia displays, and the interior design of

the space is as distinctive and modern as the art pieces.

My goal was to try to make an image that did not merely show the

new gallery. I wanted to give our readers a feeling of the space and

artwork.

The Orange Lounge has an 800-square-foot project space in the

back, which is designed for 360-degree projections. Artist Diana

Thater's video piece, called "Wicked Witch," is on display. Thater's

video images were of poppies in continuous motion. Layers of color

are separated in order to create disorientation and confusion. I shot

the display at a slow shutter speed. It was a necessity in order to

capture the images on the screen. I had quite a few shots of people

sharply silhouetted. But this patron had walked passed me as I was

making an exposure, blurring her image slightly.

Usually a blurred subject doesn't work, but in the context of this

gallery, and my goal of representing the artwork, I felt this blurred

motion worked well.
