Padres back up no-hitter

June 16, 2004

Carlyle. Christian Arceyut hit a two-run single to right that plated

Stone and Ryan West, a play that Rob Stillman said put the game out

of reach.

"The game was 8-1 and Arceyut got a big shot down the first-base

line that scored two, and once we got to 10-1 I felt that the game

was over at that point," he said. "That was a big hit. All year there

have been situations where all 12 hitters have done something to win.

That's the good thing about this team"

Three consecutive walks scored Nathan Frank and Arceyut and three

consecutive singles scored Vasquez, Eric Rasmussan and Jonathan Ball.

Another walk plated Rios and Carlyle scored for the second time in

the inning on a fielder's choice. Rob Stillman was happy with the 12

hits

"You don't want to win on walks, you want to win with you're team

hitting the ball," he said. "I'm glad that we came out and hit the

ball basically today."

Rob Stillman hopes to see the same competitive spirit come

Saturday.

"We played well, but I just hope we don't get complacent with that

win," he said. "I'd like to see the same effort they gave me

[Tuesday]. I don't need to win 18-1, but if they give me the same

effort, we'll be in the game. I don't know if we'll win or lose, but

all you can do is hope they play the best that they can."
