One of the biggest local youth dual swim meets of the summer was in
action Saturday in the Harbor View Homes neighborhood pool in Newport
Beach.
The two swim programs are bounded geographically even though most
of the children attend nearby Andersen Elementary.
Harbor View edged rival Newport Hills, 850 464.
Several records were broken in the meet, including the girls 15-18
age division 200-yard medley relay. Ashely Chandler, Holly Van Hiel,
Vivian Liao and Tracy Kubas -- all attend Corona del Mar High --
completed the swim in 2:00.39, breaking the record set in 1989 when
Dawn Bandaruk, daughter of Harbor View head coach Ted Bandaruk, was a
member.
The girls 11-12 girls age division 200 medley relay record was
also broken by Chelsea Giger, Heather Van Hiel, Kate Berry and Margot
Money (2:10.82).
Harbor View sibling success was also evident as Ricky Zak (boys
7-8) and Niki Zak (girls 9-10) won their respective breaststroke
events. Timmy Hanson won the boys 5-6 boys freestyle while brother
Justin Hanson won the backstroke and butterfly in meet-record times.
Newport Hills' Stephen Kipp took the boys 9-10 boys while Kasey
Kipp won the boys 13-14 backstroke.
Newport Harbor product Sean McGhie of Harbor View won the 15-18
boys 50 freestyle in a meet-record time of 22.74.
