Newport cuts down Flowers, 5-3

Newport Beach's boys under-16 soccer team received two goals each

from Jake Kalwitz and Isai Viveros to spur a 5-2 victory over the

South Irvine Flowers in AYSO Region 97 action last Saturday. Sergio

Rodriguez added another to cap the scoring for Newport.

Benjamin Pepic narrowly missed the goal from 18 yards out in the

final seconds.

David Garrett made some strong crosses with P.J. Baca controlling


the midfield.

Chris Lewis, Edgar Torres, Junior Rubio and Justin Whisler turned

away several Irvine offensive attacks.

Nick Normandin and Gary Guerrero added strong defense alongside

sweeper Daniel Gonzalez. Tommy Olson made several saves in goal.

In girls under-14 play:

* Newport Crush 1, Spiffinators 1:

The top two teams battled to a tie.

Brittany Sowers scored the lone goal for the Crush while Megan

Beauchamp and goalkeeper Nichole Horlick added strong defense. Nikki

Liddicote scored the Spiffinators' lone goal.

Laura Catron and Lauren McGill anchored the Spiffinators' goal

with Desiree Alexander, Alexandra McIntosh, Alyssa Lee, Katherine

Sanders, Haley Willard and Linda Freeman providing additional


In girls under-12 play:

* The Beach Babes lost, 4-2, but maintained effort throughout

their game.

Stephanie Storch and Kelly Rorden provided strong goalkeeping

while Whitley Peters made some accurate throw-ins.

Patty Moddelmog and Lindsey Larson led the defense with strong

offensive moves made by Maddy Storch and Bryn Wensley.

Lindsay Ricker switched from defender to forward in the second

half and added a goal.

In girls under-10 action:

* Blue Crush (Light) 3, Blue Crush (Dark) 2:

Courtney Buck scored all three goals for Blue Crush Light in the

win. Jamie Searles, Savanna Gastineau and Morgan Donahue provided the

assists. Gastineau made two diving saves in goal during the fourth

quarter to preserve the lead.

Ana Figueroa and Kendall Walker played tough defense.

Kyla Kerr and Devin Donahue kept the ball away from the goal and

Shannon Barth made a valiant attempt to save a corner kick.

Sweeper Brinley Siemonsma covered much of the field.

* Breakers 3, Green Anoles 0:

The Breakers recorded their second shutout of the season with the


Striker Meaghan Kay scored first with Casey Duckworth adding he

second goal of the season to give the Breakers a 2-0 lead.

Christina Young moved from goalkeeper to striker in the second

half and took a pass from twin sister Robin Young to score the

Breakers' final goal.

Forwards Alexandria Chandler and Alyson Delbrook kept the ball in
