Community college softball: Bollinger steps down

April 24, 2002

Steve Virgen

COSTA MESA - Jim Bollinger, the Orange Coast College softball coach

for the past two seasons, will no longer coach the Pirates, so that he

can totally focus on his travel softball program, OCC Athletic Director

Fred Hokanson said Tuesday.

Bollinger actually stopped coaching the Pirates with three Orange

Empire Conference games remaining (beginning from April 17). His

assistants, Thalia Marinos and J.C. Vasquez, worked as the co-coaches,

while Barbara Bond, who also coaches badminton and women's soccer in the

fall, served as the team administrator, Hokanson said.

Hokanson also mentioned OCC will open the adjunct coaching softball

job effective today.

"He's a travel ball coach and he didn't realize all the time it takes

to do a travel ball program and coach a (community college) softball

team," Hokanson said. "He had some frustrating times. He's a good coach.

(A drop off in talent) really got to him. He was frustrated."
